Course Outline - Beginners Acrylics Painting Course, Margaritas

Summary 

1. How to prepare the canvas. What keys are used for and how to put them into the frame. How to prepare the surface of the canvas and what gesso is, how it helps. How to make your own gesso for a fraction of the price.

2. How to analyse the composition of a painting.

  • Do you like it? What is it that is appealing to you?
  • What would you change and why?
  • What works/ doesn’t work? 4. Where is the focal point? Are there more than one?
  • What is the mood of the painting? How is it achieved?
  • Which components would you like to keep in your version,and what do you plan to change? How?
  • Which direction does the light come from? Is It Consistent?
  • How does the artist make the flowers come forward or go back?

3. How to draw out your design and composition. Why would you not use graphite pencil? How to use underpainting to bring parts of the painting forward or make it recede.

4. Learn different paint techniques, using two brushes with different colours on to blend together, use a spatula to spread pint on, smooth together colours using a fan brush. Building up from general painting to putting in details or highlights last.

Week 1:

Starter: Prepare the canvases.

Main: Analyse the subject painting. Discuss the question above. Plan the composition with focal point/s. Draw out Margaritas using ellipses. Start painting the background first layer.

Homework: complete the background bending together two colours

Week 2:

Starter: Analyse the painting so far...how’s it going? What do you think needs to change?

Main: Paint in the main flower. Look at resource photos. Try to get the shadows consistent and the nature of the flowers accurate. Move onto the less important flowers using the same colours and techniques. If they are further away, soften the contrast and details. Leave out the centres.

Homework: Adjust the colour, detailsorshading as necessary

Week 3:

Starter: Analyse the painting so far...how’s it going? What do you think needs to change?

Main: Fill in all of the flowers. Add the centres. Do they lookthree dieneionalinthe resource photos? Where do the shadows fall? What colours form the cooler shadows? Which ones have more detail and are in focus?

Homework: Use a fine brush to add warm colours, highlights or details where necessary.

Week 4:

Starter: Seeing patterns and spaces between.

Starter: Analyse the painting so far...how’s it going? What do you think needs to change? Look at the overall painting...is it the mood/ colour scheme you decided on initially? Do you wish to leave it or change it?

Main: Finalise any detaisor focal points. Complete a second layer inthe background if necessary to bring the whole painting together in the mood you initially chose.
